A Fixate(tion) on Haven: Q&A with Ray and Tom

Fixate Productions - an emerging production company headed up by Thomas Noble and Ray Sondergaard - bring to 2high Festival a brand new and brutal work ‘Haven’ (click the link for more info!)
We had a little Q&A session with these two clever creatives about the piece, the team and some other little nick-nacks and pearls of brainiac brilliance:
1. Where did ‘Haven’ come from?
RAY: From a place that loves theatricality and dirty fun. The work takes its stimulus from Nick Cave and the Bad Seed’s album ‘The Murder Ballads’ and has been in development for just over a year. It was originally our graduating work (then called ‘These Lovely Creatures’) but I think that it comes from a place of curiosity about the bad stuff….the nasty’s that we keep in our closet…from our dark desires and our most beautiful nightmares.
2. 3 things/artists/genres that inspired the production?
RAY: Nick Cave, Tom Wiats, dirty side shows and the underground
3. If your team were a 90’s cartoon show which show would you be and why?
TOM: Probably a mix of the energy of the ninja turtles, but the bizarreness of Fraggle Rock. Those were some scary ass monsters.
4. What are you looking forward to seeing at the festival?
TOM: I’m looking forward to all the different works that Fen Lan is doing. She’s working with some great artists in Brisbane, and its a great cross cultural collision that will be beautiful
RAY: MESS!! I’m looking forward to the energy of the festival, there is already a buzz around brisbane about it. I can’t wait to meet new artists doing ballsy stuff and engaging with new works. *ballsy is not a word, I realise, so perhaps… challenging? exciting?… they don’t have quite the same ring though…
5. Advice to aspiring theatre/cabaret/performance makers?
RAY: Do it until it hurts. Never stop digging into materials or ideas that you love. Enjoy the process, ask for help, respect your fellow artists and never listen to your fear.
6. A quote you LOVE?
TOM: A quote - If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree. (Jim Rohn)
It promises to be a gut-punchingly good performance :) Can’t wait to see you guys in action, Fixate!
